Online Championship: Season 2
Round 5 of 6 is underway in Season 2 of the Online Championship. This time around Chris Allen is the surprise package, building on his solid Season 1 performance to hold the sole lead with 4/4.
Naturally, online chess will continue until morale improves (or at least until the pubs open). There are two parallel tournaments coming up, both starting on 1st July, immediately after Season 2:
You are most welcome to join us (indeed, feel free to play both, if you're eligible and have the time). See you online 👊
Online Championship coming to a close
The final round of the Online Championship is upon us. Season 1 attracted 39 participants, including some of the biggest names in Sheffield chess. Elliott Spencer of Ecclesall leads with an unbeaten 5/5 and looks set to take the title, but there's still a chance of late drama.
95 games have been disputed so far, and most have attracted a healthy live audience on lichess. It's been great fun watching and discussing the games together in the chat as they unfold; it's an experience that you can't really get anywhere else in chess, and I've been absolutely loving it throughout.
Once this finishes, we're going to do another one. If you didn't enter this time, please do follow the link above to join us in Slack, and you'll be the first to hear about it when it begins.
Chess in the age of coronavirus
With over-the-board chess being largely outlawed for the foreseeable future, it's time to think about how we keep playing through this crisis.
To that end, Oli is trying to get an online championship set up, to keep local players occupied during these strange times. If you're interested in playing, or know anyone who might be, please spread the word.
